Reframing a Conflict

This diagram illustrates the process of reframing a conflict whereby parties with incompatible positions are first guided to ignore their positions and explore their interests. They are then offered a reframe to translate their incompatibilities into differences that are not incompatible. Finally, parties are supported to generate multiple solutions that hold potential for meeting all concerns. The example is used of a conflict about the presence of a U.S. flag in a church sanctuary.
